Children 18:3 - 3 Rockin siblings making rockin music

In our last issue, we featured an interview with Capital Lights, one of the best punk rock bands currently in the Christian music industry... this month we've got another gift for all you punk fans out there; a styling interview with Seth from the band of 3 home-schooled siblings alson known as "Children 18:3" ( Whose debut album also happened to make number one on Superdave's list of the top 20 albums of 2008)
So, keep reading on as he reveals all the info on them as a band; including what he feels about people who judge them on the way they choose to dress and look as a a band...

Q: Firstly, thanks for taking the time to l_4d3d2fad90523334ae93262c59fff52aanswer the questions, with Capital lights last month and now you guys are definitely rounding up some of the best our there! We're really excited about your music, can you tell? Could you start things off by telling us who makes up the band and who does what?
A: David Hostetter - Guitar and Vocals
Seth Hostetter - Drums
Leemarie Hostetter - Bass Guitar and Vocals

Q: How did you get into making music?
A: Both our parents were music majors in college so, we basically had it coming. We've been performing since we were about 2 or 3 years old and we had to take guitar and piano in school. The band was a natural progression from there and we started it up in 1999

Q: You're all siblings who were home schooled together so, how much school work actually got done in between all of the music making?
A: We always got up and did school before anything band related. Since we did it all at home though, we could get school done faster and have more time in the for practicing and other things.
Q: Once you'd started as a band at what point did you decide to make a go of it and see how far you could take it?And was it before or after you'd made the "Places I don't want to go" EP?
A: It was always in our minds to take it as far as we could; .we love music, and making music, so why should we stop?

Q: How did your music get in to the hands of tooth and nail records? Tell us a bit about that and some of the experience in making your first album
children-18-3A: First of all, we LOVE Tooth and Nail; we grew up listening to their bands. I believe they first saw us at a band tournament in Minneapolis MN. Recording records is a lot of fun and has its challenges as well. We try to have everything basically how we want it when we go in to record.

Q: Were these songs you'd written especially for the album or were they written over a course of several years as the band was starting off?
A: Well, since it was our first record on T and Nail, we had a lot of time to get stuff ready before we recorded. Some of the songs are several years old, and some were written just before recording.

Q:The album was chosen as our album of the year and many others seem to agree that you have something worth listening to... what do you think it is that makes your music well received by critics and listeners alike?
A: Wow! Well, first off, thank you!
I'm not exactly sure how to answer that ...why do people like our music? I think maybe because the whole record doesn't sound exactly the same. Maybe because there isn't a whole lot of punk rock bands right now? Maybe it's because of David's lyrics and melodies? I'm not really sure; I am glad people like it though

Q: Let's talk about some of the songs. The album kicks off with "All my balloons" and it has a sequel later on in the album, what is the message behind the song?
A: In a nutshell; that song is about going through l_ba9b4eb6508a4eb2b7c3d4da8f8454cdchange in your life; in general and how sometimes things are not fun and don't seem right at the time, but in the end turn out to be good things, and you grow through it.

Q: Now as someone who has watched the Bourne identity more than a few times; I would be willing to bet a few bucks that "LCM" is inspired by it. (If I were a betting man that is). Is that true or would I be a few short?
A: Hahaha; a lot of people think that... I'll just say maybe it is and maybe it isn't...

Q; "Ditches" has images of someone fighting a private war, what would you say are some of the battles you've faced as a band?
A: Not getting tours! Seriously, we would like to be playing 200+ shows a year, but for some reason we can't get many tours. I don't know if its just the economy, the fact that we are a punk rock band in a metal era, our image that some people don't understand, our booking company, or what? We just can't seem to stay busy enough... anyone reading this, if you'd like to book us contact us on myspace.

Q: "The city" has some definite Ska influences and there's lots to suggest that you're not just a pop punk band, who are some of the bands that inspired your sound?
A: We love Rancid a lot and we grew up when ska was the thing; we actually started out as a ska band. It's fun to play different styles of music sometimes.

Q: There's a great image of disposable paper hearts in "Homemade valentine", what inspires you when it comes to writing lyrics?
A: I'm gonna leave that one up to the listener to dig in and discover the meaning of that one.

Q: Is there any song in particular that you all three agree on as your favourite?
A: I don't know about favourite, but I would say we all agree that "Homemade valentine" is Children_183_2probably the song that is most "us." I love that song!

Q: As a band you are on a label that is essentially Christian and your songs and name suggest you are in that category but how do you relate your faith and your music. Do you consider yourselves a "Christian band"?
A: Absolutely! We could get into a deep discussion about what exactly "Christian music" is, but I'll just leave it at, we all love Jesus and He is our Saviour and we are definitely a Christian band.

Q: The last song on the album implies that your music is not that well accepted in Christian circles and I know for a fact some places won't sell the album based on the cover photo. How would you respond to those who judge the band?
A: I don't know how you relate that song to us not being excepted in some circles, but the bible says to REJOICE when you are persecuted and even killed for your faith, that is what the song final is about.
I think it's very unfortunate that some places won't sell our music or book our band based on our image. They are judging us based on outward appearance only, and don't know our hearts at all. Our whole goal is to be a blessing, be Jesus to people, create good music and share the love of the Lord. We are not going to change who we are because some people won't take the time to understand that. (Please note, we are not bitter or angry with anyone that doesn't understand us, its just unfortunate)

Q: Are there any bands on your label or in the general Christian sphere that you admire?
A: We grew up listening to Tooth and Nail bands; it's an awesome label, they put out good music. There are a lot of good bands to check out on Tooth and Nail and we would definitely recommend doing so.

Q: I have seen the video on your Myspace page that shows you performing at a small country fair and only five or six people are excited about the music but what are some of the highlights of touring so far?
A: HAHAHA! Everybody loves that video; we children 18-3honestly get more comments about that than our music video. I think every band has shows like that at some point or another. Touring is great because you get to play everyday and meet new people. We're a pretty laid back band so, I don't really have a lot of funny tour stories to share..

Q: Do you find that being siblings is a hindrance or help when you're stuck in a bus on tour together?
A: It's awesome! We get along super well and always have; one thing we do disagree on however is that David likes the windows down and I like the Air Conditioner! It's an ongoing dispute!

Q: Of course the other thing we're really excited about is the prospect of a new album sometime this year, how is the process coming along and when can we expect to hear more from one of 2008's most pleasant surprises?
A: We are working on writing songs for our next record now; I have no idea when it will be released. We are hoping to do a few more tours on our self titled release beforehand.

Q: Thank you so much for your time and we're definitely looking forward to more good things from the band in years to come
A: Absolutely! Keep rockin' our tunes!
